Both quarterbacks will be wearing different numbers in the NFL than they did in college. Gabriel used No. 11 to start his college career at Central Florida before switching to eight at both Oklahoma and Oregon.
Sanders wore No. 2 during his four college seasons between Jackson State and Colorado. Interestingly, his former teammate Travis Hunter used No. 12 at both stops.
Monday's number reveal by the Browns also included jerseys given to their offseason trade and free-agent signings. Wide receiver DeAndre Carter will use No. 2 and Kenny Pickett took No. 8. Gabriel's UCF number was taken by cornerback Tony Brown II.
It's probably for the best that Sanders didn't get his college number in the NFL. Browns quarterbacks have historically had a rough time regardless of what number they use, but the franchise seems especially cursed when they use No. 2.
The two most famous Browns quarterbacks to wear No. 2 were Tim Couch and Johnny Manziel. They combined to go 24-43 with 12,806 yards, 71 touchdowns and 74 interceptions.
Plus, the infamous Browns jersey with all of their quarterbacks since returning to the NFL in 1999 began with Couch.
Bailey Zappe is the most recent Cleveland quarterback to use No. 2. He started one game last season, throwing for 170 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in a 35-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
Even if you're not a superstitious, no quarterback should want to be associated with that type of history.
Sanders and Gabriel are the latest in a long line of players who will attempt to erase all of the Browns' woes at the most important position. They will get their first chance to show what they are capable of doing during three-day rookie minicamp from May 9-11.
