Predictions for John Cena, Pat Mcafee, Jey Uso and Full WWE Backlash 2025 Match Card

Chris MuellerMay 9, 2025

Backlash is the annual WWE PLE that follows WrestleMania, so management often uses it to follow up on some feuds from 'Mania while also launching new feuds that can carry the company through the summer.

Following his historic 17th title win at WrestleMania over Cody Rhodes, John Cena and one of his oldest rivals, Randy Orton, reignited their longstanding feud over the WWE Championship.

We also saw the return of Becky Lynch at the Show of Shows, but her immediate heel turn and betrayal of Lyra Valkyria has set her on a path to challenge for the women's Intercontinental Championship.

The men's IC title will also be on the line when Penta challenges Dominik Mysterio, Pat McAfee is set to take on Gunther, and Jacob Fatu will defend his recently won United States Championship against three hungry competitors.

Let's take a look at each match and make some predictions for various Superstars on the card.

Gunther Is Going to Hit Pat McAfee Harder Than Any NFL Player

Monday Night RAW

After losing the world title to Jey Uso at WrestleMania, Gunther appears to have hit rock bottom. Not only has he been emotionally unstable, but he took out his frustrations with the people who had the least impact on his loss, the announcers.

Pat McAfee came to Michael Cole's defense and ended up being choked out by The Ring General for his efforts.

The former football player is no stranger to the ring, but it's been over two years since his last singles match, so to say he is coming into this at a disadvantage is a massive understatement.

In the end, this is not going to be a triumphant victory of McAfee. He is going to get in a few good moves to make it look like he has a shot before Gunther puts him down with a series of chops that will leave his chest beet-red and chokes him out.

Prediction: Gunther chokes out McAfee

Jacob Fatu Pins LA Knight

2 of 5
SmackDown

Fatu winning the United States Championship at WrestleMania was a big moment for him, but he is already stepping up to a big challenge in his first defense.

Not only does he have to contend with the former champion, LA Knight, but he also has two big, angry former world champions hoping to win the belt.

Drew McIntyre and Damian Priest have had their own issues recently, so their feud is secondary to the main title focus, but their rivalry is going to play a factor in the outcome.

With four guys who are as entertaining as them, this could end up being the most entertaining match on the card, but it might have a very predictable ending.

Fatu will retain the belt by pinning Knight, likely after McIntyre and Priest fight each other somewhere else in the arena. Their own hatred for each other will be their undoing and set up another singles bout while giving Fatu an easy path to retaining his belt.

Prediction: Fatu pins Knight

Dominik Mysterio Wins with Help from Judgment Day

3 of 5
Monday Night RAW

The men's IC title bout will see Mysterio defend the belt against the man who has been a thorn in the collective side of Judgment Day, Penta.

The masked man has already come up short once when fighting for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 41, so he is hoping a singles bout will give him better odds.

Unfortunately for him, wherever Dirty Dom goes, the rest of Judgment Day is not far behind. He is going to have Finn Balor, Carlito, Raquel Rodriguez and the recently returned JD McDonagh in his corner.

As fun as it would be to see Penta win his first belt in WWE, it doesn't seem likely that management would give Dom such a short reign with his first singles title.

This should be fun, but the ending is going to be the same overbooked Judgment Day nonsense we have been getting for the past couple of years.

Prediction: Judgment Day helps Mysterio win

Becky Lynch Wins Her First Intercontinental Championship

4 of 5
Monday Night RAW

Valkyria became the first women's intercontinental champion on January 13 when she defeated Dakota Kai in the finals of a tournament.

Since then, she has been a great champion and defended the belt in some fun encounters, included a highly lauded match against Bayley, but no title reign lasts forever.

WWE has brought Lynch back and immediately positioned her as the top heel on Raw, so it would make perfect sense to have her dethrone the woman who has been so vocal about looking up to her as an inspiration.

Valkyria will hold gold again in WWE, but the Superstar who has been nicknamed Becky Hogan by some fans online is going to walk out of Backlash with a shiny new belt after solidifying her heel turn against one of the most likeable babyfaces on the roster.

Prediction: Lynch wins the IC title from Valkyria

John Cena Defeats His Oldest Rival

5 of 5
SmackDown

The story of Cena cannot be told without Orton and Vice Versa. These two have been each other's biggest rivals throughout their two decades in WWE, and they will have what will likely be their final encounter this weekend.

For the first time ever, The Viper finds himself in the role of the hero while Cena is playing the villain. The changeup has given their rivalry a fresh dynamic and allowed what was once old to feel new again.

Having Cena break Ric Flair's record with a 17th title win was a big deal, and seeing as it will be his final run with a belt in WWE, there is no way the company would book him to lose it less than a month after winning it at the biggest event of the year.

Orton is going to pop the crowd with an RKO or two, but he is going to leave St. Louis without a 15th championship. Cena is going to retain and continue his reign of terror as he looks to close out his career by retiring with the title, and in his words, ruin pro wrestling forever.

Prediction: Cena retains the title
