The company announced in December 2023, a decade after Grand Theft Auto V's initial release, that a follow-up was on the way. The first trailer confirmed the series is returning to Vice City, albeit in the modern day.
After originally earmarking the fall of 2025 for Grand Theft Auto VI to hit stores, Rockstar announced last week that the date has moved to May 26, 2026.
"With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception," the company said. "We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve."
GTA VI is one of the most anticipated games of all time. The Ringer's Ben Lindbergh explained how the newest delay could have a ripple effect across the industry. The Nintendo Switch 2 will now have less competition once it's available in June, and the absence of Grand Theft Auto VI will allow other smaller games to retain a bigger showcase for the rest of 2025.
For Rockstar, adding a few more months to the development will be an acceptable bargain if it ensures the game arrives without any major flaws.
One market analyst firm projected in January that GTA VI could make $1 billion in preorders alone. However, mixed reviews or bad word of mouth could put a dent in the game's initial sales figures.
Based on the visuals Rockstar has shared so far, the hype will eventually be worth it.
