Wimbledon 2015 Women's Final: Serena Williams vs. Garbine Muguruza Predictions

Steven CookJul 9, 2015

Serena Williams has a chance to continue writing her storybook 2015 chase for a calendar year Grand Slam while Garbine Muguruza gets her opportunity for a seismic upset in Saturday's Wimbledon women's singles final.

The top seed has been her usual dominant self throughout play in her 15th appearance at the All England Club, only dropping two sets in her six matches. After rolling past a semifinal test, No. 4 Maria Sharapova, in straight sets, she's only a final away from her sixth Wimbledon title.

As for the challenger, Muguruza has been more than your average No. 20 seed. Her powerful service and all-around prominence have willed her to the final, and she has recent success against the mighty American for that much-needed confidence.

2015 Wimbledon Women's Final

Matchup: No. 1 Serena Williams vs. No. 20 Garbine Muguruza

Date: Saturday, July 11

Time (ET): 9 a.m.

TV and Live Stream: ESPN and WatchESPN

Despite some noticeable tests from Heather Watson and Victoria Azarenka, it's been a fairly simple road for the top seed as she attempts to win her third Grand Slam title in as many tries over the 2015 season.

Unlike at Roland Garros just over a month ago, where she saw match after match go to three sets, she's improved her consistency throughout Wimbledon. That was never on better display than in yet another drubbing of supposed rival Maria Sharapova, whom she ousted in a straight-set semifinal.

That was just the continuation of what's been a dominant Grand Slam season for Williams, as Bleacher Report UK showed:

That may put her incredible streak into better perspective, but it simply can't describe the type of tennis she is playing at the moment. Even amid times of great worry when she appears to be slipping, it's like she flips a switch and goes into an unbeatable mode.

Also unbeatable, at least recently, has been her opponent.

Muguruza has needed three sets three different times to overcome her opposition, but the Spanish player has turned it on when it matters most. She's proving her two quarterfinal appearances in the last two French Opens aren't flukes and that she can do those same things on grass.

She's also proved to be a thorn in the side of Williams in the past, at least when she ousted her in the second round of the 2014 French Open. The American will have to pull from that to reign supreme this time, as she told Wimbledon:

Amazingly enough, that defeat well over a year ago in the early days of Roland Garros is the last time someone has defeated Williams in a Grand Slam singles setting. She's since won three straight major titles, starting with the 2014 U.S. Open and continuing on through this year's French Open.

In that span, Williams has simply taken her game to a level where even the likes of Sharapova are reduced to desperate guessing on return shots and playing out of their game. Muguruza may have done well to establish her strengths against Agnieszka Radwanska in the semifinal, but even she gave her no chance Saturday, per Jane McManus of ESPN New York:

As weird as it sounds from someone who just lost to said player, Radwanska couldn't be more on the money.

While Muguruza has undoubtedly been playing the best tennis of her career over the last several days, it takes much more than that to top Williams. With how her last several dozen Grand Slam matches have gone, Williams will need to be off her game and susceptible.

Neither of those things has much of a possibility of happening when Grand Slam No. 21 of her career is on the line, as well as the chance for a Grand Slam sweep.

Prediction: Williams wins, 6-3, 6-4
