Preakness 2025 Known Odds, Schedule and Sovereignty Predictions
Sovereignty has the opportunity to chase the Triple Crown at the Preakness Stakes.
However, the Derby winner's team didn't commit to his participation on May 17 just yet.
Sovereignty trainer William I. Mott outlined what the decision-making process would look like, per Jason Frakes of the Louisville Courier-Journal.
“We want to do what’s best for the horse,” Mott said. “Of course you always think about a Triple Crown, and that’s not something we’re not going to think about. …
“We have to come to a conclusion probably in the next few days, but it’s not going to be this morning.”
If Sovereignty is in the field on May 17, he will likely be the favorite to capture the second leg of the Triple Crown.
Sovereignty had some of the lowest odds to win the Kentucky Derby. Journalism was the pre-race favorite, but Sovereignty's odds were below 10-1 for the majority of the week leading up to the race.
Sovereignty is after the first Triple Crown since Justify won the honor in 2018. It's also the 10-year anniversary of American Pharoah's Triple Crown.
Sovereignty isn't in the same class as both of those horses yet, but he can get closer to horse racing immortality with a win at Pimlico Race Course.
The rest of the Preakness field is yet to be determined. The Preakness field is traditionally much smaller than the Derby. A year ago, only eight horses entered the starting gate at Pimlico.
