Sovereignty won the neck-and-neck race with Journalism down the final stretch of the Kentucky Derby.

The horse produced a second Derby win for trainer William I. Mott and the first Derby victory for jockey Junior Alvarado.

Mott won his other Derby title with Country House in 2019, but that victory came after Maximum Security was disqualified.

This time around, Mott and his team celebrated right away. Now, they have to prepare for a potential Triple Crown chase.

Many experts thought Journalism would be this year's Triple Crown chaser because he entered the Derby with four straight wins. He could prove to be a tough opponent at either the Preakness or Belmont Stakes if he's entered.

Sovereignty closed as one of the horses with low odds to win the Derby, so it's not like the horse came out of nowhere to win.

That makes the Triple Crown chase feel more real than previous seasons when longshots captured the Derby and were big question marks going into the Preakness.

Baeza, who was a late entrant due to a scratch, came in third. Final Gambit and Owen Almighty, two longshots, rounded out the top five.

Sandman and Luxor Cafe, the two other horses who closed with lower than 10-1 odds, placed in seventh and 12th, respectively.
