The 3-year-old colt crossed the finish line first Saturday evening in the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby. Sovereignty finished ahead of betting-favorite Journalism, who took home second place.

This was the first derby win for jockey Junior Alvarado and the second for owner Bill Mott. Sovereignty entered the day with 5-1 odds, which were second to Journalism's 3-1 odds.
Sovereignty finished with a time of 2:02.31 and finished 1 1/2 lengths ahead of Journalism.
This was Sovereignty's sixth start and third win in his career. This is also the seventh consecutive year that the betting favorite did not take home the victory.
Sovereignty leaves Churchill Downs with a notable victory and will be the only horse eligible for the Triple Crown. Justify, who was the last favorite to win the Kentucky Derby, is the most recent Triple Crown winner from the 2018 season.
The Preakness is next on the schedule and that race will take place May 17 in Baltimore.
