Preakness 2025 Early Predictions Post Kentucky Derby

Sovereignty began his quest for the Triple Crown with a win at the 2025 Kentucky Derby.

Sovereignty outlasted pre-race favorite Journalism down the closing stretch to become the chaser of the Triple Crown.

Next up for the newly-minted Derby winner is a trip to the Preakness Stakes in two weeks.

The Preakness has not had a serious Triple Crown contender come to Pimlico Race Course in a few years because the last few Derby winners had long-shot odds just to win the first leg of the Triple Crown.

Sovereignty will try to become the first horse to do the Derby-Preakness double since Justify won the last Triple Crown in 2018.

Sovereignty should have a good odds to win the Preakness. He was one of the three favorites for most of the week building up to the Derby.

The Preakness field will not be determined until the week of the race, but if Journalism is not on the start list, Sovereignty has an even better chance to pull off the double.

At minimum, Sovereignty will be seen as a possible Preakness winner and a horse that has the potential to carry the Triple Crown quest into the Belmont Stakes.
