Sovereignty won with a time of 2:02.31, as Journalism settled for No. 2 and Baeza earned the No. 3 spot. It was an impressive finish for Baeza, as the three-year-old colt was only added to the Derby field on Thursday once Bob Baffert-trained horse Rodriguez was scratched due to a foot bruise.
Citizen Bull, also trained by Baffert, led throughout the early portion of Saturday's race before Neoequos pulled ahead once the field reached the final turn.
Both horses eventually fell behind Sovereignty and Journalism due to their late charges, though.
Junior Alvarado, Sovereignty's jockey, secured the first Kentucky Derby win of his career.
"I can't even describe it," Alvarado said in an interview immediately following the win (h/t USA Today's James H. Williams). "I'm pretty sure (my family is) way over the moon right now."
Sovereignty is also trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, who earned his second Derby victory. His previous win came in 2019 with Country House.
While Sovereignty may not have been a heavy underdog entering Saturday's action, it was still an impressive finish.
Now, it'll attempt to clinch a victory in the second leg of the Triple Crown at the Preakness Stakes on May 17.
