Kentucky Derby 2025 Odds, Post Positions Info and Vegas Lines for All Horses

A draw into a certain post position has the potential to upgrade a horse's chances of winning the Kentucky Derby.

Some entrants are contenders on pure skill alone, but history tells us that a few dark-horse candidates could be in the mix based on their post positions.

Pre-race favorite Journalism doesn't need any extra boosts to his winning potential, but he is starting in a favorable post.

Post No. 8 produced three winners since 2006. Barbaro, Mine That Bird and Mage all won from that position in the last 19 years.

Journalism has the lowest odds of any horse at 3-1, and while the post position luck is nice, he is also the best horse in the field.

Journalism comes into Churchill Downs with four consecutive wins, which was far and away the best set of pre-Derby results.

While Post No. 8 has been lucky recently, Posts Nos. 5 and 10 have the best overall Derby win percentages.

Post No. 5, which is occupied in 2025 by American Promise, produced 10 Derby champions. Two of those winners came in the last decade and four have entered the winners' circle from that post since 2002.

Post No. 10 will not be occupied in 2025 due to Grande's midweek scratch. Grande and Rodriguez were both removed from the field. Baeza came in as the one alternate.

Sandman and Sovereignty, the two horses with the lowest odds besides Journalism, do not have history on their sides.

Sandman starts in Post No. 17, which has never produced a Derby winner. Sovereignty's Post No. 18 has won twice, but one of those victories for Country House in 2019 came via Maximum Security's disqualification.

The inside positions have been the most successful of late. Two of the last three winners and multiple top-three finishers from the last three years have come from Posts No. 1-10.

That data just helps the case for Journalism to take home the first leg of the Triple Crown.
