Kentucky Derby Entries 2025: Race-Day Predictions for Horses, Jockeys in Lineup

Zach BacharMay 3, 2025

The 2025 Kentucky Derby is here.

The 151st edition of "The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports" has arrived, as the field of 19 horses will compete at Churchill Downs for the $3.1 million first-place prize from the $5 million prize pool.

The 2025 Derby has only featured two scratches, as Bob Baffert-trained horse Rodriguez was sidelined on Thursday due to a foot injury. Grande was also scratched, with the three-year-old colt experiencing heel issues.

Predictions for Top Horses and Jockeys

1. Journalism, Umberto Rispoli

2. Luxor Cafe, Joao Moreira

3. Sovereignty, Junior Alvarado

4. Burnham Square, Brian Hernandez Jr.

5. Sandman, Jose Ortiz

A morning-line favorite hasn't won the Derby since 2018, but Journalism is a strong candidate to break the streak. The 2025 Santa Anita Derby winner has an impressive combination of speed and stamina to go along with a strong post position.

Journalism will be starting from the No. 7 post position, which has produced seven Kentucky Derby winners since the starting gate was introduced in 1930.

Sandman is also one of the favorites to win the Derby, but the history of trainer Mark Casse and jockey Jose Ortiz in the competition isn't stellar. In 10 prior Derby appearances, Casse has yet to finish in the money.

Ortiz has come close to winning the event, although his best result as a runner-up occurred in 2018.

Rounding out the favorites is Sovereignty, coming off a No. 2 finish in the Florida Derby despite making a strong late run. It's also worth noting that Sovereignty is trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott.

Luxor Cafe could be an unexpected winner, as the horse wrapped up a five-length victory in the Fukuryu Stakes on March 29 in Japan. Jockey Joao Moreira provided a positive update on the colt's response to travel.

“The traveling obviously did take a little bit out of him, but he’s doing so well, eating everything,” Moreira said, per Jason Frakes of the Louisville Courier Journal. “He just seems to be very happy, as I am.”

Post time for the 2025 Kentucky Derby is set for 6:57 p.m. ET.
