Kentucky Derby 2025 Lineup, Full Race Guide for All Horses and Jockeys

Joe TanseyMay 2, 2025

The first leg of the Triple Crown takes place on Saturday at Churchill Downs.

The 2025 Kentucky Derby features a potential Triple Crown winner in Journalism and 18 other horses looking to claim one of the most prestigious titles in horse racing.

Saturday's 19-horse field was adjusted twice already this week. Baeza was added to field in place of the scratched Rodriguez. Grande was scratched on Friday morning.

Race Guide

Journalism is the pre-race favorite and the most likely horse to make a run at the Triple Crown.

Justify was the last horse to capture the Triple Crown in 2018 and this is the 10-year anniversary of American Pharoah's Triple Crown year.

Journalism does not have recent Derby history going in his favor, though, as four straight horses listed above 10-1 won at Churchill Downs.

A year ago, Mystik Dan crossed the finish line first with 20-1 odds.

The winning trainer and jockey from last year's event are entered in the field with different horses.

Mystik Dan trainer Kenneth McPeek is in the field with longshot Render Judgment, while jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. will be aboard Burnham Square.

History is on Journalism's side, though, when it comes to winning post position. Three of the last four Derby winners came from single-digit post positions. Journalism will begin the race from post No. 8.

Sandman and Sovereignty are Journalism's biggest contenders according to the pre-race odds. The two horses start next to each other in posts Nos. 17 and 18.

One or two longshot horses should be in the mix for the win as well, especially with the recent history of Derby winners.

The Bob Baffert-trained Citizen Bull is worth watching just because Baffert has six Derby wins as a trainer. Baffert's other entrant was Rodriguez before that horse was scratched.

Recent Derby-winning jockeys Javier Castellano (Owen Almighty) and Flavien Prat (Baeza) are aboard dark-horse candidates if you're looking for the slightest edges among the horses with longer odds.
