Kentucky Derby Field 2025 and Pinpointing Contenders from All Horses and Jockeys

The 2025 Kentucky Derby has three consensus favorites.

Journalism, Sandman and Sovereignty are the only horses with odds lower than 10-1 going into Saturday's race.

Journalism is the clear-cut favorite among the trio at 3-1, but the odds suggest Sandman and Sovereignty each have a chance to win the first leg of the Triple Crown.

Top Contenders

Journalism

Journalism owns the most impressive resume among the 19-horse field.

The horse drawn to Post No. 8 owns a four-race winning streak.

Journalism's most-recent victory came at the Santa Anita Derby over Baeza, who entered the Derby field earlier this week due to Rodriguez's scratch.

Journalism's won at three different distances in his career, and if he wins on Saturday, he will have won at four lengths in just the span of six months.

Sandman

Sandman is also coming off a win in his last race.

The 6-1 horse captured the top prize at the Arkansas Derby on March 29 ahead of a few Derby participants.

Sandman consistently finished inside the top three over his last five races dating back to October.

It's not the pristine winning resume that Journalism boasts, but Sandman does have experience running at the front in all types of races.

Sandman owns the edge in jockey experience with Jose Ortiz, a two-time Triple Crown winner. Both of those victories came with horses listed below 10-1.

Sovereignty

Sovereignty owns two wins and a second-place finish in his last three races.

The 5-1 horse has not raced as often as the other two favorites, but he's been consistent in the Derby tune-up events.

Sovereignty will be head-to-head with Sandman from the start of the race. The two horses start next to each other in posts 17 and 18.

That could help both horses surge forward while Journalism works through a potentially slower part of the field.

Journalism is still the clear favorite, but if any other horse were to win, it would likely be Sandman or Sovereignty.
