Grand Theft Auto VI Release Date Delayed to May 2026, Rockstar Games Announces

Gamers will have to wait longer than expected to get their hands on the new Grand Theft Auto release.

Rockstar Games announced on Friday that Grand Theft Auto VI's release date has been pushed back to May 26, 2026.

While a previous launch date was never officially announced, Take-Two Interactive—the publishing label that owns Rockstar—said in May 2024 that it was being targeted for fall 2025.

Even though the release has been pushed back, Rockstar offering an exact date is at least an encouraging sign. The game was originally announced in December 2023 along with a teaser trailer.

Since that initial announcement, there has been very little new information released. The game has been confirmed to drop for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. There is also speculation about a PC version, but that has not been confirmed at this point.

Grand Theft Auto VI will be the first new game in the series since 2013. Rockstar has released remastered versions of Grand Theft Auto V and the trilogy of Grand Theft Auto III, San Andreas and Vice City for next-gen consoles within the last four years.

This will also be the first new release for Rockstar Games since Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018. That game also went through a long development cycle prior to its release, but it paid off by becoming one of the 10 best-selling games of all time.

After the first trailer dropped, very preliminary estimates for Grand Theft Auto VI suggest the game could earn more than $3 billion in total sales within its first 12 months of release.
