Favorite: Journalism

The San Felipe S. at San Anita winner enters this year's Kentucky Derby as the favorite to win the race, thanks to displayed stamina, which he received in part from his sire, Curlin.

Where as many horses are one style of runner or another, Journalism has exhibited an ability to press the pace on the rest of the field or hang back, get a field for the race, and make calculated sprints late that put him in a winning position.

He settles into races early, which allows jockey Umberto Rispoli to direct him accordingly, rather than feeling things out for most of the race and forcing a move late.

The on-track discipline has allowed Journalism to win four of its five starts and finish in the top three. He is unbeaten thus far in 2025 and has the opportunity to bolster his resume with the biggest win in the sport.

If he can get Rispoli and trainer Michael W. McCarthy to the winner's circle, the colt is the type of runner who will have some thinking that a Triple Crown title is within reach.

His toughest challenge could come in the form of Sandman, a patient runner who prefers a stalking style that puts him in the right spot for a late-race surge. The same can be said of longshot American Promise, which has the training of the great D. Wayne Lukas and the stamina necessary to win on a mile-and-a-quarter track.
