Commanders Reportedly May Get Super Bowl Host Consideration After New NFL Stadium

Timothy RappApr 28, 2025

The Washington Commanders and DC Mayor Muriel E. Bowser announced Monday the team's plans to build a new stadium at the site of the old RFK Stadium.

According to Nicki Jhabvala and Mark Maske of the Washington Post, the planned roof for the new stadium "would enable the NFL and its owners to give consideration to Washington for hosting a future Super Bowl."

According to the Washington Post, the Commanders are expected to foot $2.7 billion of the bill for the new 65,000-seat stadium, with taxpayers putting up $500 million as part of the proposed plan.

But per that report, "total taxpayer costs are expected to top $1 billion when parking facilities, recreation improvements and other water and electric infrastructure are included—a price tag likely to spur heated debate on the DC Council and among DC residents about how public money is used."

The City Council will still need to approve the project, though the Commanders and the Mayor's office are now in agreement regarding the proposed plan, which would see the new stadium ready by 2030.

"Without exaggeration, this will be the best stadium in the country when it's built," team owner Josh Harris told reporters on Monday.

As is the case for most moderns stadiums, plans for other revitalized districts in the area—in this case, one for entertainment; another for hotels, housing, retail and restaurants; one for recreation; a fourth for affordable housing; a fifth riverfront district that would bookmark land for public spaces and parks—are in the works.

As for hosting the Super Bowl, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told reporters a new roofed stadium would "dramatically" increase those chances.

"This is a very special day, one that many of us have been looking forward to many years," Goodell added. "... This is an important project that the league recognizes and will be there to support."
