Throwback Thursday: Ken Griffey Jr. Hits HR off Warehouse in 1993 Home Run Derby

Kyle NewportJul 9, 2015

With the 2015 MLB All-Star Game being played in his hometown of Cincinnati, Ken Griffey Jr. will be in town for the festivities.

The bad news for fans: Junior's smooth swing won't be on display in the Home Run Derby.

Griffey will be at the Derby but just to throw out the first pitch. While seeing him back at Great American Ball Park will be a treat for Cincinnati fans, baseball fans everywhere wish that the most storied slugger in the competition's history were able to take part in this year's event.

Junior won the Home Run Derby three times (1994, 1998 and 1999) in his career. As great as he was during the years he won the competition, his greatest moment came during a loss.

The 1993 Home Run Derby took place at Baltimore's Camden Yards, where the B&O Warehouse stands beyond the right field wall. On one mighty swing, Griffey crushed a home run off the warehouse, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

According to the official website of the Baltimore Orioles, Griffey's blast traveled 465 feet.

Texas Rangers slugger Juan Gonzalez won the 1993 Home Run Derby, but Griffey certainly left his mark on the contest—and on the building
