Matt LaFleur Talks Packers Drafting Jordan Love, Says Team Liked WRs Jefferson, Aiyuk

Timothy RappApr 23, 2025

Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur has no regrets about the team's decision to draft Jordan Love in 2020.

"If you don't have a quarterback in today's game, you're screwed," he said on The Dan Patrick Show Wednesday while discussing the team's decision to trade up and draft Love at No. 26 overall at the 2020 NFL draft. "Let's just throw it out there. It's just tough. So you need to have that position solidified, and we're lucky we got him. He's not only a great player, but I think he's an even better person."

He suggested that the team might have taken Justin Jefferson or Brandon Aiyuk if either player had been available, however. Jefferson went No. 22 overall, while the San Francisco 49ers traded up to No. 25 and selected Aiyuk.

The pick was highly controversial at the time, as the Packers still had Aaron Rodgers under center and looked like a true contender. Drafting Rodgers' replacement, rather than getting him more weapons for a title push, rubbed some fans—and likely Rodgers—the wrong way.

But all's well that ends well. Love has led the Packers to consecutive playoff appearances and looks like the franchise quarterback for the foreseeable future. You won't catch LaFleur with any regrets.
