Wimbledon 2015: Results, Scores, Winners and Thursday Twitter Reaction

Tim DanielsJul 9, 2015

Serena Williams continued her dominance of rival Maria Sharapova with a straight-sets victory on Thursday to advance to the women's final at the 2015 Wimbledon Championships. She's now won 17 straight matches over her talented Russian counterpart.

In the other semifinal, 21-year-old Garbine Muguruza continued to emerge as a budding threat with an impressive display of power tennis to take out crafty veteran Agnieszka Radwanska. She will be playing her first Grand Slam final on Saturday.

Let's check out the complete scorelines for each of the singles matches on Day 10 of play at All England Club. That's followed by a recap and reaction as the season's third major tournament nears its conclusion.

Day 10 Reaction

There are times when a player can advance to a final thanks to a run of outstanding fortune. Perhaps a run of upsets blows the draw wide open or they go up against a top player who simply doesn't have it on that day. That's not the case for Muguruza.

She's faced four straight seeded players (Angelique Kerber, Caroline Wozniacki, Timea Bacsinszky and Radwanska) and played well enough to earn those victories. She's previously showcased high-end potential, but this is really the first time she's displayed top form for an extended stretch in a major.

Today's triumph was not only important for her development, but also a milestone moment for women's tennis in Spain, as noted by ESPN Stats and Info:

Being able to rise the occasion after being forced to a third set was the sign of a maturing player, too. It's something that caught the eye of Jon Wertheim from Sports Illustrated:

On the flip side, this was a real chance for Radwanska to capture her first Grand Slam title, and she couldn't capitalize, as highlighted by Brad Gilbert of ESPN:

Now the question is how Muguruza will respond on the championship stage. She's played good enough tennis to at least give her a puncher's chance against Williams, but nerves can bring those hopes to an end quickly if she can't settle in.

Even if she doesn't come out on top, however, her strong play suggests she's going to become a constant presence at the business end of majors in the years ahead.

Williams' ability to completely control matches against Sharapova is a bit perplexing. Between the French Open and her run to the Wimbledon final, she's been pushed to a third set seven times, including by some unheralded opponents.

Yet, when it's Sharapova on the opposite side of the net, she suddenly assumes a laser focus and is rarely challenged despite the No. 4 seed's power. She took control early in today's match and there was never a sense she was in danger.

Ultimately, Williams has proved herself as a better overall player, and the extra motivation she gains in their head-to-head encounters often turns them into blowouts. Matt Cronin of Tennis Reporters summed it up well:

The latest victory moves the American within eight victories of the elusive calendar Grand Slam. It makes her one of the most must-see athletes is the world right now, an opinion also held by T.J. Holmes of ABC News:

As for Sharapova, while there's definitely a physical element in play, her problems against Williams also have a significant mental component at this stage. Carole Bouchard of The Yellow Ball Corner noted her frustrations carried over into the post-match press conference:

Although Williams is the clear favorite heading into the final, she must be careful. Muguruza features the power necessary to make life difficult and, if she can survive those early butterflies without falling too far behind, an upset isn't out of the realm of possibility.

Looking ahead, Day 11 features the men's semifinals, and it promises to be a memorable day at All England Club.

Top seed Novak Djokovic starts the action with a clash against Richard Gasquet, who's coming off a dazzling performance to upset Stan Wawrinka. The Frenchman will need to elevate his game again to beat Djokovic, who holds an 11-1 record in their prior meetings.

Then it's the matchup fans have been waiting for since the draw was released. It's seven-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer facing off with British-fan-favorite Andy Murray in a match where breaks will likely be extremely hard to come by.

It should be a spectacular atmosphere on Centre Court with all that star power on display.
