Wimbledon 2015 Results: Wednesday Scores, Predictions for All England Club

Brian MaziqueJul 8, 2015

We almost had the top four seeds make it into the semifinals for the first time in 20 years on the men's side, but No. 21 Richard Gasquet had other plans. In an epic five-set duel with No. 4 Stan Wawrinka, Gasquet outlasted the French Open champion 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 11-9.

The match took three hours and 28 minutes to complete, and the third set was a classic back-and-forth battle. Ultimately, Gasquet was able to summon some extra juice on his serve in the extended fifth set and get a handle on Wawrinka's serve. Wawrinka's 48 unforced errors proved to be his undoing.

Gasquet broke him in the final game of the match to claim the victory. He'll have just a little time to celebrate his win because the top seed will be waiting for him in one of Friday's semifinal matches.

No. 1 Novak Djokovic remained perfect against No. 9 Marin Cilic. Djokovic ran his record against Cilic to 13-0 with his 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory on Wednesday. Djokovic never allowed Cilic to have an opportunity to gain confidence in this one. Cilic never had one break-point chance in the match as Djokovic was efficient and effective.

The top seed hit 27 winners with just 12 unforced errors. After a five-set match against Kevin Anderson that extended two days, Djokovic seemed thrilled to work just an hour and 48 minutes on Wednesday. During a post-match interview, Djokovic gave himself a positive assessment. Per Bryan Armen Graham of The Guardian, Djokovic said:

"A very solid performance after a very tough five-set fourth-round match against Kevin. Didn’t know how my body was going to feel. I was confident and hoping I was going to play well and that’s what I’ve done.”

He clearly played well, and now it's on to the next challenge against the man who played spoiler to the top-four dream semifinal.

As well as Gasquet played in his win over Wawrinka, there's no doubt Djokovic had to be thrilled to see the Frenchman upset his recent nemesis. Djokovic is 12-1 against Gasquet in his career, and the Serbian's path to the finals just got a lot easier. Djokovic lost in the finals at the French Open against Wawrinka, whose power game has given him issues of late.

Djokovic will beat what will likely be an emotionally spent Gasquet in straight sets.

No. 2 Roger Federer smashed No. 12 Gilles Simon in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, 6-2. The match took just an hour and 34 minutes to complete. At one time in his career, Simon had given Federer some problems; He beat him twice in 2008. Since then, Federer has won six in a row against Simon including Wednesday's match.

Wimbledon noted Federer's latest accomplishment:

Fed will take on long-time rival and No. 3-seed Andy Murray in the semifinals. Murray was made to work by the unseeded Vasek Pospisil, but the Brit prevailed 6-4, 7-5, 6-4. Federer leads the all-time series against Murray 12-11. When the two last met in February, Federer dominated Murray 6-1, 6-0.

While Murray has obviously played well and looks back to top form after back surgery slowed him the last two years, Federer has been the most impressive player in the tournament on the men's side. He'll win and move on to the men's final.

I've had Federer winning it all since the beginning of the tournament, and I've seen nothing that would make me change the prediction.
