According to MLB.com, Ohtani's jersey has been the most-purchased MLB jersey in the U.S., Japan and worldwide since 2023. Monday's list accounts for Nike jersey sales from the Fanatics network of sites since the culmination of the 2024 World Series, which was won by Ohtani and the Dodgers.
In addition to Ohtani and Freeman, the reigning champions were well-represented on the list of most popular jerseys with shortstop Mookie Betts at No. 4, starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto at No. 9, starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw at No. 11 and second baseman Kiké Hernández at No. 16. The six players on the list were the most of any MLB team.
Ohtani and the Dodgers are off to a 5-0 start, which includes two wins over the Chicago Cubs in the Tokyo Series. Ohtani's star power was on full display as he played in his home country, and he admitted that it was a bit overwhelming even for him.
"It's been a while since I felt this nervous playing a game," he said at the time. "It took me four or five innings."
For Soto, it's the first time in his career that his jersey placed in the top three league-wide. After leaving the New York Yankees to join the Mets, he opened the year with a home run and two RBI as the team dropped two of three games against the Houston Astros. He will try to get the team back on track when it opens its series against the Miami Marlins on Monday.
