NFL Exec Views Travis Hunter as Full-Time CB Who Can Play 'Handful' of Snaps at WR

Adam WellsMar 22, 2025

Even though Travis Hunter has said he wants to continue playing full-time on both sides of the ball in the NFL, he might have to settle for being a part-time wide receiver.

Per ESPN's Matt Miller, one NFL executive said his team views Hunter as a cornerback who "could play a handful of snaps" at wide receiver.

There is some debate within the NFL about what Hunter's best position is. During the scouting combine last month, the two teams currently picking first and second in the draft had different answers when asked about that.

Draft analysts generally seem to be of the opinion that Hunter's best path is to be a full-time cornerback who moonlights as an offensive player.

B/R NFL scout Cory Giddings described Hunter as an "exceptionally versatile and athletic cornerback prospect" with the "length, athleticism, and football intelligence makes him a valuable asset in both man and zone coverage schemes."

If Hunter gets his way, he will be allowed to play 100 percent of the snaps on both sides of the ball.

That seems highly unlikely given the physical strain it would put on his body. Hunter was able to play at least 100 snaps in 11 of 13 games at Colorado last season, but there's a huge difference between doing that against college teams compared to the NFL.

One potential solution is for an NFL team to specifically design an offensive package for Hunter.

There's an argument it would be more financially beneficial for Hunter to prioritize being a receiver over a cornerback. There are eight wide receivers currently making at least $30 million per season, compared to one cornerback.

But if Hunter ends up being as good as anticipated as a cornerback and a useful contributor as a wide receiver, he should have no problem cashing in when the time comes for him to sign his first big contract.

The most important thing will be for whatever team drafts Hunter to figure out the best way to take advantage of his unique talents. He won the 2024 Heisman Trophy after recording 96 receptions, 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns as a receiver, plus 11 pass breakups and four interceptions as a cornerback.
