Vikings Rumors: J.J. McCarthy's Feelings Were Considered in Aaron Rodgers Discussions
The Minnesota Vikings and head coach Kevin O'Connell are committed to making J.J. McCarthy's life easier.
Alec Lewis of The Athletic reported Friday that the Vikings considered signing quarterback Aaron Rodgers early in free agency but passed after extensive discussions, which included how it would affect McCarthy.
"Once O’Connell learned of Rodgers’ interest, executives and coaches evaluated Rodgers’ film from the 2024 season late into the night," Lewis wrote. "Staffers spoke with one another for hours about all of the dynamics: how McCarthy would feel about the move, how Rodgers would fit into the Vikings’ culture, what the optics would look like and how O’Connell would blend his schematic philosophies with Rodgers’ preferences.

"Many within the building supported the idea of adding Rodgers, thinking he could still operate at a high level, especially in the pocket. Some saw a roster built to win for 2025 and McCarthy, a second-year player emerging from a knee injury with only one preseason game under his belt, as a less-than-certain option."
McCarthy was the Vikings' first-round pick in 2024 after a stellar collegiate career at Michigan. The 22-year-old QB suffered a torn meniscus during the preseason and missed the entire campaign after undergoing surgery.
In his absence, the Vikings went 14-3 and earned the top Wild Card spot in the NFC. Quarterback Sam Darnold had a terrific season, and O'Connell won the Coach of the Year.
Darnold signed with the Seattle Seahawks, leaving the door open for McCarthy to seize the starting job. Still, adding Rodgers for a season could have helped keep the momentum from last season while allowing McCarthy further time to develop and recover from the injury.
Instead, it looks like McCarthy will have a clear shot at the starting job while Rodgers plays elsewhere.
