NFL Insider: Giants Hoping for Russell Wilson or Joe Flacco Contract Amid Rodgers Buzz

Timothy RappMar 20, 2025

New York Giants fans may not be thrilled with the team's current plan to add a veteran quarterback this offseason.

According to The Athletic's Dianna Russini, the Giants are reportedly "hoping that Russell Wilson or Joe Flacco decide to come to New York. I think that's going to wind up being one of their backup plans. One or the other."

Russini added that she believes the Giants will try to move up the draft board to address the quarterback position.

That comes as buzz connecting the Giants to Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders has grown this week:

One sensible plan for the Giants would be to add a bridge starter in free agency and a young quarterback at the draft. That's where either Wilson or Flacco comes into play.

The former had a solid if unspectacular season for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024, throwing for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns and five interceptions in 11 starts, completing 63.7 percent of his passes and taking 33 sacks.

The concern came late in the season, when Pittsburgh's schedule got more difficult and the team ended the season on a four-game losing streak that cost them the AFC North crown. The Steelers then lost in the Wild Card Round to the Baltimore Ravens.

Flacco would be an even less appealing option. The 40-year-old started six games and made eight total appearances for the Indianapolis Colts last season, throwing for 1,761 yards, 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 65.3 percent of his passes and taking 18 sacks.

The Colts were 2-4 in his starts.

After years of Daniel Jones—or backup options like Tommy DeVito, Drew Lock and Tyrod Taylor, among others—the good news for Giants' fans is that there's really nowhere to go but up at the quarterback position. The bad news is that players like Wilson and Flacco are lackluster options, even as bridge starters.
