WWE Battleground 2015: Additional Matches That Would Enhance PPV Card

Ryan DilbertJul 8, 2015

Skilled gladiators still wait, sword in hand, to hear what fight lies ahead of them at WWE Battleground 2015.

Those wrestlers waiting for opportunity are key to elevating an already-promising pay-per-view. WWE would be smart to find a place to showcase both Dean Ambrose and Cesaro. Building on existing animosity is a must as well.

As of now, the Battleground card sits at five matches, as listed on WWE.com:

  • The New Day vs. The Prime Time Players
  • Kevin Owens vs. John Cena
  • Ryback vs. Big Show vs. The Miz
  • Roman Reigns vs. Bray Wyatt
  • Brock Lesnar vs. Seth Rollins

To best bolster that lineup, WWE needs to add star power, take advantage of in-progress storylines and cram as much talent as possible into the three-hour wrestling feast.

That means allowing Dolph Ziggler to get revenge. It means letting Sheamus near weapons. And for Ambrose, WWE simply has to create an excuse to put him in the ring.

As much as it will anger women's wrestling fans, there's not really an appealing option in that division for Battleground. WWE has gone with a combination of Paige against the Bellas at just about every turn.

If WWE is going to bring up some NXT women, things change. The options increase. The company can then provide the climax to the "Paige versus the Bellas" angle.

With that likely not to happen until SummerSlam, it's best to go elsewhere to better Battleground.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Rusev

Rusev is healed from his foot injury. Ziggler found that out in painful fashion as the brute tore off his walking boot, kicked The Showoff in the face and beat him with a crutch until the medical staff had to come out.

Suddenly the Lana/Ziggler-Summer Rae-Rusev dynamic is interesting. Instead of seeing lip-locking and catfights, we can now watch a wrestling match built on highly personal issues.

Ziggler seeking revenge and Rusev's jealousy make for an easy buildup to this bout at Battleground.

To keep the storyline going past the event, WWE can have Ziggler not be fully healed by July 19. He faces Rusev in a weakened state, delaying the moment where he gets revenge in front of a live audience.

This is a prime opportunity to show Rusev to be a wrecking ball once again. And WWE can rest easy knowing that Ziggler will milk every drop of drama out of this as possible.

Randy Orton vs. Sheamus (Street Fight)

It's clear that WWE is heading toward an Orton-Sheamus collision. Every time they face off in the ring, things turn savage in a hurry.

Sheamus and Orton have turned their wrestling matches into slugfests, often ignoring the rules and seeking to hurt each other rather than seek the victory. That should lead to a bout where they can build on that thanks to a lack of boundaries.

Put them in a Street Fight and have their weapons and violence make up for the lack of a deep story.

And adding the stipulation helps differentiate this clash from their other recent ones. It adds a freshness to the contest and allows Sheamus to get into the type of smashmouth battle that thrives.

In addition, a Sheamus win helps propel him. Before he cashes in his Money in the Bank contract, it's smart to have him keep leaving images of his destruction behind. That way, he comes off as a dangerous predator prowling the WWE champ.

Cesaro vs. Dean Ambrose vs. Neville (United States Championship No. 1 Contender's Match)

Cesaro has nothing lined up for him at Battleground. Neither does Neville or Ambrose. There aren't really any stories to play off with them, either.

Each man is too hot right now to not put on the pay-per-view at all, though.

They have all been killing it in the ring. Let them do that against each other with a shot against the winner of Owens vs. Cena on the line.

Having higher stakes makes the match more interesting. It's also an easy way to build this up as significant. Besides, placing three hungry challengers between the ropes like this helps continue the ongoing revival of the U.S. title.

And with this much talent in the ring, the chances of something special happening are high.

With Ambrose, Cesaro and Neville hitting their usual high notes, it's going to be hard to top them. With a lineup this stacked, stealing the show is going to take a Herculean effort.
