Rams' Davante Adams Explains Sean McVay's 'Aggressive' Recruiting in NFL Free Agency

Timothy RappMar 13, 2025

Los Angeles Rams signing Davante Adams told reporters on Thursday during his introductory press conference that head coach Sean McVay pulled out all the stops in his recruitment effort of the veteran wideout.

"I'll say aggressive, but in all the right ways, though," Adams said of McVay's recruitment approach. "He sent me a couple highlight tapes of myself, narrating. It was kind of Jon Gruden-esque a little bit. You know how he is with ball so he's breaking down every single clip. The first one was like seven minutes and then he sent another one that was probably another two minutes where he's just going through everything and talking about it. I thought he took that job to be on TV for a minute when I was watching it."

"It just shows how much ball means to him and how much of a priority I was for him and the rest of the guys here because it's not just him making those decisions," he continued. "When you have that from a coach, you're on the free market and you don't see it from anybody else to that level, it means a lot. It felt like I got ganged up a little bit but as long as I'm here, it doesn't matter."

Adams, 32, is essentially coming into Los Angeles as the replacement for Cooper Kupp, who was released this offseason. The two players aren't like-for-like stylistically, of course, but Matthew Stafford will now have a strong one-two combination of Puka Nacua and Adams in the passing game.

The latter, a six-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro, had an interesting 2024 campaign, spending the first three games of the season with the Las Vegas Raiders before securing a trade to the New York Jets, where he teamed up with Aaron Rodgers once again.

Between the two teams, Adams notched 85 catches for 1,063 yards and eight touchdowns in 14 games. By his own lofty standards, it was a bit of a down year—Adams has six seasons in his career with double-digit touchdowns and five seasons with over 1,100 receiving yards.

And now he'll have the chance to pair up with Stafford, who remains one of the sport's better quarterbacks.

"He doesn't make it any harder than it needs to be out there. He's simple," Adams said of Stafford. "... Playing each other over the years and crossing paths a few times, I gathered that he was a pretty nice, straightforward guy. You never hear anything bad in the media or anything like that. Coming out here and getting a chance to meet with him and talk to him a little bit today just kind of solidified it."
