Answer is C: If UConn Passes North Carolina Test, Big East Title Still an Option

Daniel DinunzioSep 10, 2009

Yes, it is only the second week in September, but this week's North Carolina team is one of the toughest opponents on UConn's schedule this season.  A win in this game will generate even more buzz for a program that has been built over the last decade.  A lose would bring up more questions and curiosity about where the Huskies rank in the Big East.

Let's make it clear: There is no front-runner in the Big East.  Maybe Cincinnati, but besides from them, it is a wide open race.  There is no reason to think that UConn can't compete with the tops team in the Big East.  People were ready to hail Rutgers as the toughest team in the division.  Then they got trounced at home by Cincy 47-15.

With Pat White gone to the NFL, the Mountaineers are searching for a sense of direction.  They still have star back Noel Devine, but they looked far from stellar against a sub-division team in Liberty.

South Florida is always a solid football team, but no one knows how their defense is going to be.  Matt Grothe is going to put up big numbers at quarterback, but he can't do it all.  This team will be one to watch, especially as Big East play starts.

Then there's the teams like Louisville and Syracuse.  Let's be honest, if either of these teams win the Big East, it would be a miracle.  Sorry Greg Paulaus, you're not the savior Syracuse football has been looking for, even though I expect you to win a few games for the program.

Connecticut is going to be somewhere in the middle of the back.  If they play like they did against Ohio, it's going to be hard to make a bowl game.  Then again, this team is better than that and they have the potential to be in the top tier of this division.

UConn has been to three bowl games.  They have gone bowling the last two years, and were Co-Champions with West Virginia in 2007.  This is a situation that Randy Edsall has been through before.  It is a long season, but how you play against tougher teams early on is a good indication of what direction the team is headed in.

North Carolina at home is a huge game.  No matter what the outcome is this week, the Huskies have to go into Waco, Texas and face the Baylor Bears next week.  An up-and-coming team that has a lot of excitement out of the Big 12.

The winner of the Big East Conference is still awarded a BCS Bowl Bid.  Let's not forget what is at stake.  Whether or not the Huskies have what it takes to win this conference, it is still to early to be determined.

Saturday will be a big indication.  The home crowd is sure going to be rocking and ready to do what it takes to see a UConn victory.  The Huskies remember what happened last year in Chapel Hill and now it's time for payback.  A win Saturday will show the rest of the Big East to beware of the Huskies.
