Packers Must Target Elite WR After Missing Out on Metcalf, Adams Amid NFL Rumors
The Green Bay Packers have been relatively quiet during free agency, signing guard Aaron Banks and cornerback Nate Hobbs while also failing to beef up their wide receiver room.
Gone were Davante Adams and DK Metcalf in short order, preventing the organization from bringing in a true No. 1 pass-catcher to accentuate a roster that includes Jalen Reed, Romeo Doubs and Christian Watson.
The Athletic's Matt Schneidman reported that the team never made an offer for Metcalf and that a trade with Seattle for the explosive receiver was "never a realistic possibility."

Projecting Every NFL Team's Starting Lineup 🔮

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
While it's possible the team was never in on either receiver, there must be emphasis placed on finding a legitimate No. 1 for quarterback Jordan Love and the offense.
Reed was the leading receiver in 2024, with 55 receptions for 857 yards and six touchdowns. While he emerged as a deep threat, those are not ideal numbers in a league that has Justin Jefferson, AJ Brown, Ja'Marr Chase and Puka Nacua tallying big-time stats and serving as difference-makers on their squads.
The team needs to consider adding a player who can come in and give Love that top-tier option, thus freeing up the other dynamic young stars at the position. Someone like Cooper Kupp, who the Rams plan to release, would attract enough attention from opposing defenses to provide Doubs, Reed and Watson with opportunities to get open and cause chaos in the secondary.
Ditto Brandon Aiyuk, who the 49ers reportedly regret signing to an extension, Michael Silver of The Athletic noted.
Aiyuk, in particular, is an interesting option in that he entered 2024 coming off of consecutive 1,000-yard seasons and had it not been for a torn MCL and ACL that ended his season, probably would have replicated that success.
The leading receiver for the Niners had a tumultuous last offseason with San Francisco and at one point, appeared to be headed to Washington via trade before the two sides got a deal done late in training camp.
If the organization does regret the extension and is willing to get rid of Aiyuk for reasonable compensation, the Packers owe it to themselves and their fans to explore a potential deal and see if the price is right.
Regardless of whether it is Kupp, Aiyuk or even Stefon Diggs, a free agent after a stint in Houston, the team needs to consider adding veteran depth to its roster and giving opposing teams a receiver to fear.
