Stephen Curry Announced as Unrivaled Investor; Joins Carmelo Anthony, Giannis, More
Unrivaled is adding one of the best players in basketball history to its list of investors.
The league, which is in its inaugural season, announced Tuesday that Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry is one of Unrivaled's investors.
"I am incredibly proud to be joining the Unrivaled family as the league continues to set a new standard for how women's professional sports should operate—empowering athletes and ensuring they have a real stake in their own success," Curry said in a press release. "Unrivaled is not just innovating the way we play basketball, but also how we value and invest in the athletes who drive the game forward."
Curry is one of many notable investors in the league and joins the likes of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Carmelo Anthony, Alex Morgan, Coco Gauff, Michael Phelps, Dawn Staley, Geno Auriemma and more.
The press release also noted Unrivaled landed more than $28 million in Series A funding—which included Curry's investment—as well as $7 million during the league's seed round.
Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier and New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart co-founded the 3-on-3 league to give players an alternative to playing overseas during the WNBA offseason.
What's more, players receive equity in the league.
Collier and Stewart have been joined by Sabrina Ionescu, Brittney Griner, Jewell Loyd, Angel Reese, Arike Ogunbowale and many more of the biggest names in women's basketball during the league's first year, which finished its regular season Monday.
The initial season also included a 1-on-1 tournament as a way of further engaging fans. Collier defeated Aaliyah Edwards in the final this year to win a $200,000 cash prize.
The playoffs feature two single-elimination rounds, with the semifinal games on Sunday and the championship game on Monday. The Laces face the Roses in one semifinal, while the Lunar Owls go against Vinyl in the other.
Curry knows about playing his best with the title on the line as a four-time champion. He will surely follow along with the playoffs as one of Unrivaled's investors.
