Orlando Summer League 2015: Tuesday Scores, Stats, Highlights and Reaction

Adam WellsJul 7, 2015

It's hard to know how much to take away from what happens in NBA Summer League action, but the first three days in Orlando, Florida, this year have provided a stellar platform for incoming rookies to showcase why they were so highly regarded before the draft.

Even though the NBA doesn't put together an All-Summer team, a hypothetical group of the best players halfway through this year's schedule would include Stanley Johnson, Justise Winslow, Myles Turner and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson.

There's still a long development road ahead for all these young players, but seeing them acclimate so well to games against professionals is a nice confidence boost.

Knicks Haven't Lost in a Month 🤷‍♂️

Here's how the young stars and their teams fared on Tuesday in Orlando.

Orlando Magic (Blue) vs. Memphis GrizzliesGrizzlies def. Magic, 73-71
Brooklyn Nets vs. Charlotte HornetsHornets def. Nets, 64-55
Oklahoma City vs. Los Angeles ClippersClippers def. Thunder, 80-63

Hornets def. Nets, 64-55

The Charlotte Hornets got their first win of the summer league, a 64-55 romp over the Brooklyn Nets, in three tries thanks to a double-double by Troy Daniels.

Daniels led all players with 16 points and 14 rebounds. It was a good day for the former VCU star, as Rich Cho had this to say about Daniels' prospects for next season, via James Plowright of Queen City Hoops:

The third-year guard did appear in 47 games with three different teams last season, averaging seven points in 11 games with the Hornets.

Charlotte rookie Frank Kaminsky had a decent game with 11 points and six rebounds, though he only hit four of 11 attempts from the field.

There weren't a lot of highlights for the Nets, though Markel Brown did go 3-of-4 from three-point range with a team-high 12 points.

Brooklyn's first-round pick, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, had a rough game shooting with just two points on 1-of-6. He did have some nice defensive moments, which Rod Boone of Newsday pointed out:

Cliff Alexander also added six points and four rebounds in defeat. No player has more on the line this summer than the former Kansas star, as he looks to prove his undrafted status was a mistake.

Grizzlies def. Magic, 73-71

In a thrilling double-overtime matchup, the Memphis Grizzlies knocked off the Orlando Magic 73-71 thanks to a bucket from Russ Smith with less than 90 seconds to play.

Here's how Smith's sequence looked, per NBA TV:

Smith played hero twice in this game, hitting a game-tying three with less than 30 seconds to go at the end of regulation. He finished with 20 points, nearly matching his total from the previous two games (22).

Jordan Adams also chipped in with a big scoring effort for the Grizzlies. The 2014 first-round pick scored 15 points, though he only shot 5-of-17 from the floor. Jarnell Stokes had eight rebounds, five of which came on the offensive glass.

For Orlando, Aaron Gordon continued his strong summer performance with a team-high 22 points and seven rebounds. This wasn't his sharpest effort, as he had five turnovers, but Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders also provided this highlight from the former first-round selection:

Jake Pavorsky of Liberty Ballers has taken notice of Gordon's efforts this summer:

Gordon's performance is going to be critical for the Magic this season. They are built around a strong core of young perimeter players such as Mario Hezonja, Victor Oladipo and Elfrid Payton. Nikola Vucevic is a solid offensive center, but they need a dynamic playmaking forward to take that next step.

Last year was a lost season for Gordon largely because of injuries. He looks healthy and productive this summer, so expect to see big things from the former No. 4 pick.

No one else scored in double figures for the Magic. Peyton Siva did have a game-high seven assists in the loss.

Clippers def. Thunder, 80-63

The Los Angeles Clippers (1-2) notched their first win of the summer with a dominant 17-point victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder (2-1) on Tuesday afternoon.

Led by 22 points from swingman C.J. Wilcox, the Clippers were able to control things in a wire-to-wire effort that saw L.A. outscore Oklahoma City in every frame.

Former Michigan State tweener Branden Dawson was also impressive, racking up 14 points and 11 rebounds. During his 28 minutes on the floor, the Clippers outscored Oklahoma City by a massive 21 points.

He also threw down yet another emphatic slam:

While he may be undersized at 6'6'', Dawson's energy has allowed him to shine on both ends of the floor, according to Bleacher Report's Fred Katz:

Frank Gaines led the way for Oklahoma City by dropping 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting (3-of-5 from three), but it was former Michigan standout Mitch McGary who turned heads just a bit, according to The Oklahoman's Anthony Slater:

However, Oklahoma City's inability to convert from three (3-of-16) hindered their efforts to establish any sort of consistency on offense. Outside of Gaines, all other Thunder players shot 0-of-13 from distance.
