Report: Tyrann Mathieu Release Considered by Saints Ahead of 2025 NFL Free Agency
The New Orleans Saints are considering releasing 32-year-old safety Tyrann Mathieu before the start of the 2025 NFL Free Agency, per Sportskeeda's Tony Pauline.
Mathieu has one year remaining on his two-year, $13.75 million contract with the Saints but the team is looking to release him before he becomes an unrestricted free agent next offseason.
The 32-year-old recorded two forced fumbles, three interceptions, seven defended passes and 47 solo tackles last season with the Saints who finished 5-12.

With New Orleans holding the worst salary-cap situation in the NFL at over $47 million above the cap, the Saints will need to make moves to alleviate their financial issues, likely resulting in some releases, some cuts and some potential trades, per Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport.
The former LSU standout earned his last All-Pro nod in 2020 while with the Kansas City Chiefs. During the 2020 season, Mathieu recorded six interceptions, nine passes defended and 48 solo tackles.
Although he is no longer producing at the same level, recording his third lowest in solo tackles last season, he still posted a passer rating against of 76.4.
The three-time Pro Bowler was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in 2013 with the No. 69 overall pick, spending five seasons with the team. He then played one season with the Houston Texans, three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs and the last three years with the New Orleans Saints.
Before the news of a potential release, Davenport had projected a trade that would send Mathieu to the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round pick.
Last season, Baltimore had the league's second-worst pass defense, making Mathieu a logical fit to bolster an otherwise successful Ravens squad in an area of need.
