NFL Trade Rumors: Commanders' Jonathan Allen Was Discussed in Deebo Samuel Talks

The Washington Commanders landed wide receiver Deebo Samuel from the San Francisco 49ers in return for a fifth-round pick, but the deal almost included a Commanders veteran.

Per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, defensive tackle Jonathan Allen was included in trade discussions between the two sides but was ultimately left out. Fowler noted that the $16.4 million Allen is due this year could have led to his exclusion from the trade.

Allen, who has been with Washington since he was drafted in 2017, played just eight games a season ago because of a torn pectoral muscle, recording 19 tackles and three sacks. In his last healthy season in 2023, he finished with 53 tackles and 5.5 sacks.

Though the 49ers didn't want Allen, he could still be on the move this offseason. Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reported last week that Washington permitted Allen to seek a trade before the final year of his contract. Jones added that "multiple teams have fielded calls related to Allen in recent days."

While Allen has served the Commanders well and has been a steady presence through their rebuild, it could be in Washington's best interest financially to move on from him. The 30-year-old will earn a base salary of $15.5 million in 2025 and has a cap hit of $22.353 million, which is the third-most on the team.

The Commanders could likely find a decent trade for the veteran as they look to continue building around star quarterback Jayden Daniels.
