Alex BallentineMar 1, 2025

Gervonta Davis will make his first 2025 appearance in the ring on Saturday night when he looks to defend his WBA lightweight title against Lamont Roach Jr. in Brooklyn.

Davis will look to retain his undefeated record and continue his dominance in the lightweight division. "Tank" remains the most electric talent in the division with a nearly 100 percent finish rate.

Roach has put together an impressive record in his own right. He'll enter the ring with a 25-1-1 record and a six-fight win streak to his name.

Let's take a look at the vital information for catching the fight as well as a preview and prediction for the championship bout.

Gervonta Davis v Lamont Roach - Promotion Press Conference

The oddsmakers have made it clear that this isn't expected to be a very competitive fight. Roach Jr. has some skills, but Davis is clearly on another level and that is expected to be on display Saturday night.

Davis was originally in talks to put on a highly anticipated bout with Vasiliy Lomachenko. Unfortunately, those talks stalled and a bout with Roach Jr. was set up.

There is some backstory. The two met as amateurs where Davis took a decision victory. But this isn't the same kind of superfight that would have been Davis vs. Lomachenko.

Roach is a talented boxer who will look to fight behind his range-finding jab to land power shots. Unfortunately for him, Davis is much better with a similar style. Only 10 of Roach's career wins have come by way of knockout while Davis has finished 28 of his 30 victories.

That doesn't bode well for Roach's ability to go the distance with Tank.

There is the added intrigue of Davis recently talking about walking away from the sport for a while.

“[The end] is close, for sure. I don’t know, it’s just a little draining. I just want to step back for a little bit and just focus on me, personally," Davis said on First Take (h/t Wil Esco of Bad Left Hook). "I feel like I’ve been doing this for some time now and I just want to give myself a break and focus on me as a human being, me as a father, me as a son and things of that nature.”

That alone should drive some people to watch Tank perform regardless of opponent. He has another platform to put on a performance against an opponent who is going to be willing to engage.

It should end in familiar fashion.
