WWE Battleground 2015: Most Likely Heel and Face Turns at Event

Aaron BowerJul 6, 2015

With some feuds floundering at the moment and some stars starting to become lost in the shuffle ahead of SummerSlam, it may not be a surprise if WWE executes a few turns at its upcoming Battleground pay-per-view.

From the bottom of the card right through to the top, there are possibilities for swerves and turns, which create opportunities for some dramatic action to unfold.

With five matches scheduled at the time of writing but more set to follow, don't be surprised if you see some heel or face turns, or even both, at Battleground, with the following stars the most likely contenders to fit the bill.

Lana

Although Rusev's momentum came grinding to a halt after losing several pay-per-view matches to John Cena, it still didn't feel entirely right when the focus switched to his faltering relationship with his sidekick, Lana.

Lana and Rusev worked incredibly well as a heel duo, with Lana attracting plenty of heat for her feisty anti-American promos, even if one or two of them overstepped the mark somewhat.

Therefore, her babyface turn and alliance with Dolph Ziggler hasn't worked at all. Furthermore, it has done little to boost the standing of Ziggler: Fans see Ziggler as a bona fide main event star, not someone who should be involved in petty love triangles in the middle of the card.

So with Dolph and Lana's alliance going nowhere, perhaps the best option would be for Lana to revert back to type and turn heel at Battleground. If Ziggler and Rusev meet in a filler match at the show, it would not only be a good way to get Rusev back on the winning trail but would also save Lana's rapid decline in popularity and importance among WWE's female roster.

She should turn on Ziggler to ensure that his loss isn't a clean one, which would inevitably give him something to work with going forward, too. There's no shame in WWE's admitting it get things wrong from time to time, but it must do something with this storyline sooner than later, before everyone really begins to suffer.

Roman Reigns

A Roman Reigns heel turn has been in the offing, or has at least been talked about, for a good few months now.

Ever since his win at the Royal Rumble failed to capture the imagination of WWE fans, it has looked as if the most sensible option to preserve Reigns as a main event star is to turn him heel.

After all, it worked when he was the spearhead of The Shield's rise to stardom during its early months on the main roster.

The trouble lies in finding the right opportunity to do it. The result of Reigns' match against Bray Wyatt does not seem like the best fit for that particular scenario, but there could be another opportunity on the night.

For instance, if Dean Ambrose is booked to compete in a match, then perhaps Reigns could execute the turn there to get him instant heat by turning on one of the company's most popular stars. Costing Ambrose a victory and seemingly halting his momentum would instantly make him hated by a vast majority of WWE fans, and for a valid reason.

It could also set up a feud between Reigns and Ambrose to keep them both at the upper end of the card while Seth Rollins, Brock Lesnar and The Authority are dominating the WWE World Heavyweight Championship scene.

Seth Rollins

Lana and Roman Reigns are undoubtedly the two front-runners for heel turns at Battleground, but could the most likely face turn come from the WWE world heavyweight champion?

Seth Rollins will face Brock Lesnar in the main event at Battleground, but given the simmering tension between the champion and The Authority, their relationship could be about to implode in the most dramatic way possible.

With Lesnar clearly popular enough to hold his own as champion without the involvement of The Authority, the most likely scenario for a Rollins face turn could come after the match.

A clean win for Lesnar over the champion would incense Triple H and Stephanie McMahon, who are both infuriated that their handpicked man for the championship has failed to answer the challenge posed to him.

Cue Triple H delivering a Pedigree in the centre of the ring when Lesnar and Paul Heyman have vacated, turning Rollins face and setting up a mouthwatering feud between The Authority and Rollins at SummerSlam.

It would not only give The Authority fresh impetus and a new foe but could also be a brilliant switch for Rollins, who has been a heel for well over a year.
