Report: Micah Parsons, Cowboys Haven't Discussed Contract Extension amid Trade Rumors

Julia StumbaughFeb 21, 2025

The Dallas Cowboys have not yet discussed an extension with Micah Parsons, according to Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News.

Parsons is currently on track to hit free agency after the 2025 season.

Watkins noted Cowboys representatives "typically begin contract talks with player agents at the NFL scouting combine." The 2025 edition of the event runs from next Monday until March 3.

Parsons is set to make $24 million after the Cowboys exercised his club option for 2025. He has recorded 52.5 sacks through four seasons in Dallas.

The NFL told teams earlier this week that the salary cap would increase to somewhere between $277.5 million and $281.5 million in 2025.

That increase, which will give teams at least $22 million more in space than the 2024 season, was celebrated by Parsons on X:

The news comes just over one week DallasCowboys.com’s Patrik Walker reported Parsons has “recently sat down with owner and general manager Jerry Jones to lay the groundwork for what will inevitably be an exceptionally complex, and lucrative, contract.”

“There's definitely a plan in place, but we'll just see how everything plays out,” Parsons said on Feb. 13, per Walker. “There's been no progress yet, but I'm pretty confident that something will happen, so we'll see."

Walker noted the two camps will need to negotiate complex factors including a signing bonus, escalators, cash flow and a potential trade or no-trade clause before finalizing Parsons’ next contract.

Spotrac pegs Parsons’ market value at $33.7 million per year. That means Parsons’ next deal could rival the five-year, $170 million deal Nick Bosa signed with the San Francisco 49ers in 2023 as the highest-paid edge rusher in the NFL.

This marks the second straight offseason the Cowboys have negotiated a high-profile extension for a star player.

A summer holdout by CeeDee Lamb resolved last August with a four-year, $136 million deal. Dak Prescott meanwhile kept playing before settling talks in September with a $240 million extension that made him the highest-paid player in NFL history.

Parsons has previously indicated he will not consider holding out, but the Cowboys could still benefit from getting rid of the uncertainty and lingering trade rumors surrounding their star defender before offseason OTAs kick off.
