Claudio Marchisio, Juventus Agree on New Contract: Latest Details, Reaction

Tyler ConwayJul 6, 2015

Claudio Marchisio and Juventus agreed on a five-year contract extension Monday that will keep the talented midfielder at the world power for the remainder of his prime.

Team president Andrea Agnelli announced the agreement, which had been long rumored. Marchisio has been with Juventus dating back to his youth career, leaving only for a short loan to Empoli during the 2007-08 campaign. He has made 309 appearances for the club overall.

"It's a feeling that sits alongside my first training session in 1993," Marchisio said, per Goal.com. "I'm delighted to wear the shirt I've always wanted. Finding the motivation to keep giving even more is what matters most."

Marchisio, 29, scored three goals and had six assists last season in Serie A play. It was the first time since 2011-12 that he made at least 30 starts at the club level, keeping his form high and staying fully healthy. There was a brief scare in March about a potential ACL tear suffered on the international level, but further testing showed he had only suffered a minor injury.

News of Marchisio's re-signing comes on the same day Andrea Pirlo officially completed his move to NYCFC. Pirlo, 36, spent the last four seasons manning the Juventus midfield after more than a decade at Milan. His departure will undoubtedly open a bigger role for Marchisio, who now looks as if he'll be a Juventus lifer.
