American women represented three-eighths of the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. Following Tuesday's action at the All England Club, just one remains.

It's exactly the one you'd expect.

Top-seeded Serena Williams will be making her ninth semifinal appearance across the pond after roaring back from early struggles for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Victoria Azarenka.

It was the second time in her last three matches that Williams has been pushed to a deciding set. Starting off the match accurate and poised, Azarenka won all but four of her first-serve points and aggressively charged the net for a solid 6-3 victory. She also took advantage of Williams' bouts with inaccuracy, picking up wins on just enough receiving points.

Unfortunately for Azarenka, there were two more sets remaining.

Williams recaptured momentum in the second set with a series of dominant serves, leaving Azarenka flailing for a weak return or missing the ball altogether. The world No. 1 had 14 aces and dropped only six first-serve points over the final two sets. Whereas Azarenka was the aggressor early on, Williams turned up the heat and didn't really struggle at any point after the first set.

"We just saw today why Serena is No. 1," Azarenka said, per Art Spander of Newsday. "I haven't seen her play like this, honestly, even in the last matches before that."

Williams, in typical fashion, remained unsatisfied.

"I do believe and I hope I can serve better," Williams said, per Spander. "But I mean I always try to serve big on grass. That's my game, just aces. I felt like I was never really up, so I need to go back and look at this match."

Looking to halt Williams' attempt at the Grand Slam will be rival Maria Sharapova, who worked her way through her own three-set matchup against Coco Vandeweghe. The match took two minutes, 45 seconds to complete, by far the longest of the quarterfinals, serving as further evidence of Sharapova's battling tendencies. She won despite double-faulting 10 times and posting more unforced errors (23) than winners (20).

Vandeweghe lost an extremely winnable match thanks in large part to her own mistakes, as officials charged her with 27 unforced errors. The unseeded American also lost 11 of her 14 break-point opportunities. During and after the match, Vandeweghe also complained of Sharapova's alleged unsportsmanlike conduct on her serves.

"What I experienced, what I felt from her moving around in between my serving motion, was not, I don't think, sportsmanlike," Vandeweghe said, per Peter Bodo of ESPN.com. "I try to play as fair as I can. You know, when I felt like it wasn't being reciprocated, that's when I spoke with the umpire for her to deal with."

Sharapova denied being aware of Vandeweghe's complaints after the match, saying she wasn't going to argue against someone else's thoughts. The Russian will be playing Williams for the first time since their Australian Open final, which obviously did not go her direction. Sharapova has lost her last 16 matches against Williams, including five at major championships.

The other semifinal won't have quite as much history. Garbine Muguruza and Agnieszka Radwanska have gone head-to-head just four times in their careers, splitting the matchups. Muguruza, who earned a straight-sets win over Timea Bacsinszky in the quarters, has won their last two. The 21-year-old Spaniard is heading into her first Grand Slam semifinal as her career appears to be trending upward.

"It is just amazing. I am so happy. It was a very tough match and I am just so excited. The last game was very intense," Muguruza said, per BBC. "It is very hard to make the last four of Wimbledon, so to achieve this I am very proud."

Muguruza has already taken down Angelique Kerber and Caroline Wozniacki en route to the semis, which should prepare her for Radwanska. The 2012 Wimbledon finalist eliminated Madison Keys in three sets Tuesday, the first time all tournament she's dropped a set.

The winner of this match will undoubtedly go into Saturday's final as an underdog. But with Sharapova and Williams set to do battle once more, it's possible the winner of Muguruza-Radwanska will have a better chance at an upset than expected.
