NFL Rumors: Jets 'a Sleeper' for Justin Fields as Steelers QB 'Intrigued' by NY

Timothy RappFeb 17, 2025

The New York Jets are going to need a new quarterback to replace Aaron Rodgers, and Justin Fields is a player to watch.

As ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported on Monday's SportsCenter, the Jets are a "sleeper option" for Fields in free agency.

"They could have some interest; they like the idea of a dual threat quarterback," he continued. "He's younger. I'm told Fields has looked at that roster, sees some intrigue there too. They have some good young pieces, like Garrett Wilson and a good defense."

The Jets would make sense. The team has young talent on offense in Wilson and running back Breece Hall, and has a solid defensive core as well. And Fields is unlikely to fetch a top-of-the-market deal, making him a safe option as a potential bridge quarterback if the Jets look to eventually address the position at the draft in future years.

Granted, Fields will have other suitors after playing well in 2024 before the Pittsburgh Steelers turned to Russell Wilson midway through the campaign, after he returned from injury.

Fowler reported that Fields "is going to be a pretty hot name" in free agency and is reportedly "open to a return to the Steelers. He had a good experience there. The belief is that Pittsburgh is also open to that, too, but he wants a clean runway to start a full season. He didn't get that last year. He would like to be the guy wherever he goes."

The Jets could offer that opportunity, at least in 2025. It's a potential marriage that makes sense.
