Houston acquired Diggs from the Buffalo Bills via trade ahead of the 2024 campaign with the hopes of forming one of the league's best pass-catching trios with the veteran joining a group that already included Nico Collins and Tank Dell.
However, Diggs suffered a season-ending torn ACL during an October victory over the Indianapolis Colts and was limited to just eight games. He finished with 47 catches for 496 yards and three touchdowns in those contests
Injuries also limited Dell to 14 games and Collins to 12 games, although the Texans still advanced to the AFC Divisional Round behind a strong defense and quarterback C.J. Stroud before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs.
The timing of the injury couldn't have been much worse for Diggs, who didn't get to help the team make a playoff run and was heading into free agency ahead of the 2025 campaign.
It adds another question mark to the 31-year-old's overall profile, although it didn't stop the Patriots from signing him.
At his best, Diggs can be one of the top playmakers in the league. He was a Pro Bowler in four straight seasons from 2020 through 2023 when he was with Buffalo and counts six seasons with more than 1,000 receiving yards on his resume.
One of those seasons came in 2020 when he led the NFL in catches (127) and receiving yards (1,535) before notching double-digit touchdown catches in back-to-back years in 2021 and 2022.
It is unrealistic to expect him to produce like that coming off a serious injury after 10 years in the league, but Diggs has a proven track record and can put up solid numbers when healthy.
If he does that, this will be a successful signing for the Patriots.
Wide receiver was a glaring need for New England entering the offseason, as it didn't have a single player at the position finish with more than 621 receiving yards in 2024.
Putting quarterback Drake Maye in position to succeed is the Patriots' best chance at returning to the playoffs in the coming years after he impressed as a rookie, and that meant adding at least one quality wide receiver this offseason.
Diggs fits the bill.
