Report: Chris Godwin, Bucs Agree to 3-Year, $66M Contract in 2025 NFL Free Agency

Chris Godwin is remaining with the only NFL team he has ever known.

The wide receiver agreed to re-sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on a new three-year, $66 million contract, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

It is not surprising to see Godwin remain with Tampa Bay considering ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported in January the belief around the league was he would remain with the club that selected him with a third-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft.

"Multiple execs expect the Bucs to try to re-sign Godwin, who has that Buc-for-life feel similar to Mike Evans," Fowler wrote at the time.

ESPN's Jenna Laine also reported in February that Tampa Bay "absolutely" wanted to bring the wide receiver back for 2025.

Now that he has re-signed, the biggest question regarding Godwin is how he will bounce back from a serious injury.

He was limited to just seven games in 2024 and was carted off the field with an air cast placed on his left leg near the end of an October loss to the Baltimore Ravens. The Penn State product underwent ankle surgery following the injury.

This won't be the first time he is expected to bounce back from a significant setback.

Godwin tore his ACL and MCL late in the 2021 campaign but returned for the start of the 2022 season. While he missed time in 2022 with a hamstring injury, he still appeared in 15 games and tallied 1,023 receiving yards.

That was part of three straight years from 2021 to '23 in which he posted more than 1,000 receiving yards as a go-to option in Tampa Bay's offense. He was also a Pro Bowler in 2019 with 86 catches for 1,333 yards and nine touchdowns.

The 29-year-old was well on his way to putting up similar numbers last season with 50 catches for 576 yards and five touchdowns in the seven games prior to his injury.

Godwin and quarterback Baker Mayfield had a clear chemistry, and the receiver was able to take advantage of the spacing that came from the double-teams Evans drew. Remaining in that offense and establishing even more continuity with the key playmakers around him should clear the way for yet another big season for the veteran receiver.
