Report: Khalil Mack, Chargers Agree to $18M Contract Ahead of 2025 NFL Free Agency

One of the best defensive players of his generation is staying put.

Pass-rusher Khalil Mack agreed to re-sign with the Los Angeles Chargers on a one-year, $18 million contract, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The deal is reportedly fully guaranteed.

Mack turned 34 in February, and he seemed open to potentially retiring after the Chargers lost to the Houston Texans in the playoffs in January.

"Man, it's a lot of different thoughts in my head right now," he told reporters at the time. "I can't really speak on a definitive decision in terms of what I'm going to do because I don't know if I'm going to play football moving forward, so there's some things I got to talk through with my wife, spend some time with my kids and try not to make a rash decision after a loss."

Yet Schefter reported in January he decided to play in 2025 and would hit the market as an unrestricted free agent.

That was welcome news for the Chargers, who jumped at the chance to re-sign him after he was still dominant during the 2024 campaign. He posted a Pro Football Reference grade of 90.4 last season, which ranked fifth among 200-plus edge-rushers.

Mack's astounding career has been defined by consistency.

Mack finished the year with 39 tackles, six sacks, nine passes defended, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery, which earned him his ninth career Pro Bowl nod.

He also has the 2016 Defensive Player of the Year award and three All-Pro first-team selections on a resume that includes stops with the Oakland Raiders and Chicago Bears before he was with the Chargers for the past three seasons.

The No. 5 pick of the 2014 NFL draft has five seasons with double-digit sacks, including when he set a career-high mark with 17 in 2023.

Plenty of 34-year-olds would likely be well beyond their peak at this stage of their careers, but Mack has remained an overwhelming defensive force as of late. He will now look to continue that level of play and push the Chargers back into the playoff picture in 2025.
