Kyren Williams, Rams Agree to 3-Year, $33M Contract Extension, Latest on Salary Cap

Doric SamAug 5, 2025

The Los Angeles Rams rewarded one of their best young players with a new deal on Tuesday.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Rams running back Kyren Williams received a three-year contract extension worth $33 million. He was set to make $5.3 million in 2025, which was the final year of his rookie contract, so Tuesday's deal is a significant bump for the 24-year-old.

“This whole day is kind of surreal,” Williams told reporters Tuesday after signing his extension. “I’ll never forget this day, but this is the day that I kind of worked for my whole life. I knew I was going to be here. I didn’t know when. I didn’t know how. I didn’t know what the outcome was going to be, but I’m here. And so I just want to say thank you to everybody that played a part in making it happen.”

The move comes for a Rams team that has $19.5 million in team cap space, per Over The Cap.

Rams general manager Les Snead said at the NFL annual meeting in March that "we would definitely like to engineer a long-term partnership with Kyren." Williams later said in May that he was in no rush to force the issue, but he was confident the deal would eventually get done. Both sides got their wish on Tuesday.

Los Angeles also added depth by selecting Auburn running back Jarquez Hunter in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL draft.

A fifth-round pick in 2022, Williams didn't take long to establish himself as the top option in Los Angeles' backfield. After a nondescript rookie season, he took over as the lead back in 2023 and produced 1,144 yards and 12 touchdowns on 228 carries while also adding 32 catches for 206 yards and three more scores despite being limited to 12 games.

In 2024, Williams picked up right where he left off and recorded career highs across the board with 316 carries for 1,299 yards and 14 touchdowns in 16 games. He also finished with 34 catches for 182 yards and two more scores.

Williams' dominance on the ground provided balance for a Rams offense typically predicated on the passing attack with veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford. He helped the team finish with a 10-7 record and win the NFC West for the first time since 2021. Los Angeles defeated the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Wild Card Round before falling to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in the Divisional Round.

Retaining Williams for the next handful of years is a step in the right direction as the Rams gear up for another playoff chase in 2025 and gives them a foundational piece to build around for the future.
