Wimbledon 2015: Updated Bracket and Notable Week 1 Results, Upsets

Steve SilvermanJul 5, 2015

Novak Djokovic looks just the way a powerful defending champion is supposed to look heading into the second week of Wimbledon.

However, Serena Williams was pushed to the limit in her third-round match, and she must now face her sister when the tournament resumes Monday.

Djokovic has not lost a set in the first week of action, as he has rolled over Philipp Kohlschreiber, Jarkko Nieminen and Bernard Tomic in his first three matches. Kohlschreiber gave Djokovic his toughest battle, winning four games in each of the three sets, but neither of his other two opponents could come close to giving the athletic and talented Djokovic any kind of challenge.

Williams appeared to be in full control of her third-round match against Heather Watson of Great Britain, as she won the first set by a 6-2 margin. However, Watson stepped up her game and won the second set 6-4 to put Williams on notice.

The third set was a war, and it looked like Watson was about to pull off a major upset. She had Serena on the run until the final few games, but Williams pulled off the final set by a 7-5 margin.

If Williams had lost the match, she would have regretted failing to take advantage of all the opportunities she had to put Watson away. She had 20 break-point opportunities against her upset-minded opponent, but she only came through on seven of them. Watson was much more opportunistic, winning five of her seven possible break points.

Williams normally might feel good about fighting through a tough match and surviving, but that's not the case here. She will have to face her older sister Venus in the quarterfinals. Neither sister enjoys facing the other for obvious reasons.

If Djokovic's form holds the rest of the way through the fortnight, he will face second-seeded Roger Federer in the championship round. Federer has dropped just one set in his first three matches, and the seven-time Wimbledon champion appears to be in top form.

Federer defeated hard-serving Sam Groth of Australia 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 in the third round to advance to the quarterfinal round once again.

Groth unloaded 21 aces in the match, but Federer managed to win 45 points on his opponent's serve. Federer's athleticism, anticipation and experience allowed him to dictate the pace of the match even though Groth's serve reached 147 miles per hour.

Petra Kvitova will not be defending her title. After winning her first two rounds with ease, Kvitova was stopped by 28th-seeded Jelena Jankovic. The 30-year-old Serbian registered a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory as a result of a powerful rally in the second and third sets.

After dropping the first set, Jankovic fell behind 4-2 before she started to attack and take charge of the match. Jankovic started going to the net, and she won 14-of-16 points when she advanced.

While Kvitova can only watch the rest of the tournament, former champion Maria Sharapova is still alive and playing sharp tennis. She won all three of her first-week matches without dropping a set, and she moved on to the quarterfinals after defeating Irina-Camelia Begu 6-4, 6-3.

Sharapova's groundstrokes were superb in that match. She made just 15 unforced errors and she was also quite opportunistic, winning 4-of-5 break points.

While third-seeded Andy Murray and fourth-seeded Stan Wawrinka advanced through the first week of action with little trouble, 10th-seeded Rafael Nadal was eliminated in the second round by unseeded German Dustin Brown.

The former Wimbledon champion has been slowed by injuries this year, and after winning the first set, Nadal lost his rhythm and confidence as he dropped the next three. When Nadal is on his game, he is usually sensational at returning serve. However, he won just 37 of 119 points when Brown was serving.

In addition to Serena and Venus Williams, Americans Coco Vandeweghe and Madison Keys have made it to the second week of the tournament. That's a lot better than Canadian Eugenie Bouchard, who made it to last year's final against Kvitova but was blown out in the first round this year. No. 3 seed Simona Halep also lost early in the tournament.

American Denis Kudla made it through to the second week on the men's side. The unseeded Kudla won two five-set matches and a four-setter to advance. His third-round triumph over Santiago Giraldo demonstrated his never-say-die attitude, but his 47 unforced errors indicate he may have problems advancing any further at the All England Club.
