Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Robin Van Persie, Matteo Darmian Rumours

Gianni VerschuerenJul 4, 2015

Robin van Persie's days as a member of Manchester United appear to be over, as the veteran striker has reportedly agreed to a deal with Turkish club Fenerbahce, who will now try to work out a transfer with the Mancunians.

Emre Sarigul and Jamie Jackson of the Guardian report the Dutchman's agent has been working on the move for days, and an official announcement only seems a matter of time:

"

It is understood that Van Persie’s agent, Kees Vos, has been in Istanbul for the past two days, involved in negotiations with the Turkish club to secure a deal. The two clubs are currently negotiating a fee for the 31-year-old, who has agreed personal terms with the club and is ready to sign a four-year deal. The Holland international’s wife initially had reservations about a move to Turkey, but warmed to the idea after spending last week in Istanbul.

The 31-year-old joined United from Arsenal in 2012 and immediately played a pivotal role in the club's Premier League win the following season, showing he was still one of the top strikers in England. His performances soon started to drop, however, and the 2014-15 campaign was arguably his worst in years.

Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe recently took a look at the likelihood of his departure and some potential replacements, and he feared Van Persie's time as a top striker is over:

The Dutch international showed his quality at the 2014 World Cup, where he scored one of the best goals of the tournament against Spain, and at the age of 31, it's reasonable to believe he still has plenty of good football left in him.

But with the Red Devils expecting to challenge for the Premier League title next season, manager Louis van Gaal needs a world-class option to lead the attack, and RVP no longer fits that description.

While Arsenal fans will gladly mock Van Persie for his perceived lack of success in Manchester, the striker did win his only Premier League title with the Red Devils. The Daily Telegraph's Darren Richman pointed out it was just one season, but one could say that spectacular campaign justified his transfer fee:

Fenerbahce seems like a logical destinationone of Turkey's top clubs who consistently play for a spot in the Champions League or Europa League. Turkish football usually welcomes aging stars with open arms, and the likes of Wesley Sneijder have found much success playing in the league.

According to Sport Witness, the Turkish media have kept fairly quiet regarding this rumour, but that doesn't have to mean anything:

It's unclear who would replace Van Persie at Old Trafford, but the summer has only just started, and there's plenty of time for Van Gaal to find the perfect target.

United Interested in Matteo Darmian

According to Metro's Tom Olver, the Red Devils are considering a bid for Torino full-back Matteo Darmian, a 25-year-old Italy international who has established himself as one of the country's best at the position in the past two years.

Napoli were also interested in the player, but according to Olver, the Partenopei are unwilling to meet Torino's asking price of £14.3 million, a fee Van Gaal would be willing to pay.

Gianluca Di Marzio's David Amoyal thinks Torino's valuation is fair value for the talented defender:

A right-back by trade, Darmian has also played as a left-back and a wide midfielder in the past, and English fans might remember him from his fantastic performance against Leighton Baines during the 2014 World Cup.

Darmian almost made Baines look silly at times, finding tons of open space in the Everton star's back. The London Evening Standard's Liam hasn't forgotten that match:

Like most Italian defenders, he's a sound tackler with solid vision, but his true value lies in his attacking potential. Darmian can run for days and always finds himself in the right position, and he has the raw pace to get back to the other side of the pitch in the blink of an eye.

He may not be the biggest name available on the market, but fans who regularly watch Serie A have undoubtedly noticed his consistency. Darmian could be one of the top value signings of the summer if he's available for just £14.3 million, and if that's the case, Van Gaal should jump on the opportunity to sign him.

At worst, he would pick up a versatile defender who will provide depth at multiple positions, but Darmian is good enough to start for United from the moment he arrives at the club and would undoubtedly make sure fans won't forget his name.
