Terrance Davis to Maryland: Terrapins Land 4-Star OG Prospect
Coveted offensive lineman Terrance Davis is heading to Maryland after making his college choice Saturday. He provides a major boost to the Terrapins' 2016 recruiting class.
Jeff Ermann of 247Sports confirmed the high-upside guard's choice.
Davis is a 4-star prospect who rates just inside the top 70 nationally, according to 247Sports' composite rankings. Perhaps more importantly, he was highly sought-after because he checked in as the No. 2 guard in the 2016 class.
It's easy to see why he's viewed so favorably. The DeMatha Catholic High School (Maryland) product features all of the raw tools college staffs are looking for in an interior lineman: size (6'4", 305 lbs), strength and quick hands to engage defenders.
His already high stock received a further boost back in June at the Rivals Five-Star Challenge, as noted by Ryan Snyder of Blue White Illustrated:
He certainly maintains high hopes for himself as well:
Yet he explained back in October that football wasn't necessarily the most important factor when it came to making his final decision, as noted by Brian Dohn of Scout.
"First, it's the education. I like to pride myself on being an outstanding student. I really want to go to a school where my degree will mean something. Playing time, I'm not worried about that. The best people will play. You have to prepare yourself for college for that.
"
The most important thing for Davis as he makes the jump to the next level is improving his technique. His raw power was often enough against high school opponents, but he's going to need to improve his footwork to reach his potential in college.
Of course, the positive aspect is it comes down to work ethic. He's got all of the natural tools, and now he just needs to put in the time with the coaching staff to become better from a technical standpoint. If he does that, he'll become a key cog and stay on NFL radars.
Landing an offensive lineman doesn't typically generate the same type of buzz as a top-end quarterback or defensive end. But Davis is certainly a marquee pickup for the 2016 class.
