WWE Battleground 2015: Matches Sure to Cause Controversy Among Fans

Aaron BowerJul 2, 2015

Just like every other pay-per-view WWE hosts, the upcoming Battleground show on July 19 offers plenty of potential for some controversial moments.

With some real blockbuster matches in the offing, there will be plenty to talk aboutboth good and bad.

There are currently five matches booked for the show, and here are the ones which will cause particular controversy with the ever-demanding WWE fans.

Roman Reigns vs. Bray Wyatt

After his disappointment in the Money in the Bank ladder match, Roman Reigns will look to bounce back with victory against Bray Wyatt at Battleground.

So where will the controversy come from? Likely from the fact that Reigns looks as though he'll be the victor, as WWE will surely put him over Wyatt to get him back on the horse and moving toward the main event scene after a lean few months.

Wyatt has not been used correctly at all since his rivalry with John Cena last year, and despite having the look and feel of a monster heel, he just doesn't seem to be used well by those making the decisions.

You only have to look at throwaway feuds with men like Ryback in recent months as proof of that.

Should Reigns pick up the win in a fairly convincing manner, expect there to be plenty of uproar among Wyatt's fans.

Reigns' reception from WWE crowds has gradually improved since his victory at the Royal Rumble, when his popularity was at an all-time low, but there is still a feeling that fans aren't completely buying into Reigns as a mega-babyface.

In addition, there's still the lingering fear that Reigns will be pushed unnecessarilyespecially at the expense of men like Wyatt.

With some background to this rivalry as opposed to Wyatt's recent ones with the likes of Ryback, there is a platform to build on. As Wyatt was denied a spot in the Money in the Bank ladder match by Reigns last month, it gives fans something to believe in with the storyline.

Throwing the feud away with a simple victory for Reigns as opposed to giving depth and substance to the rivalry would leave nothing but a bitter taste in the mouths of Wyatt fans.

Reigns is quickly establishing a reputation similar to Cena's with the way his matches play out, toorepetitive finishes with a Superman punch and a spear have drawn plenty of boos from the crowds, and if that happens again here, it won't sit right.

John Cena vs. Kevin Owens

Similarly, another bout that has a danger of being controversial for fans is the third and telling bout between Cena vs. Kevin Owens.

The biggest controversy will definitely come if Owens fails to go over on Cena and win the United States Championship. Simply put, it would just feel like Owens' push over the last month or two was completely wasted.

The NXT champion has worked tirelessly to get to this point, and if he loses to Cena for two straight pay-per-views, then there will immediately be a fear he could start to regress, which is a legitimate worry.

You only have to look at Wyatt and Rusev, two men who have come out on the wrong side of lengthy feuds with Cena in the past year, as examples of why Owens fans would be upset if he lost. They haven't really recovered from those feuds.

Owens has brought something out of Cena inside the ring that nobody has done in years, and their matches have been compelling and cutting-edge. That heaps pressure on both men to do the same again, but given that Owens is the rookie in this feud, it makes things tenser for him at Battleground.

With the score tied up at 1-1 between the men, it looks like this will be the defining match in what has been a brilliant feud.

Hopes are inevitably high that the contest will deliver in a similar way to the first two, but if it doesn't, that's another element which will upset WWE fans. If there is no back-and-forth and the conclusion is relatively straightforward, it will be a timid ending to this great rivalry, and that cannot be allowed to happen.

Seth Rollins vs. Brock Lesnar

The main event is another bout that will be controversial, as a long-running storyline that WWE fans have begun to grow tired of will feature as a heavy influence.

The Authority storyline is now beginning to repeat itself on a weekly basis. It seems to open and close most shows having had the upper hand on whoever is in its sights, and if that manifests itself at Battleground, it will cause plenty of fury and controversy.

WWE has already opened itself up to that possibility by the way it had The Authority beat down Brock Lesnar on Raw. Lesnar's recent run with the company had him pinned down as an unstoppable, unbeatable machine, yet recently, Lesnar was the victim of a three-on-one attack (Jamie Noble was legitimately injured at ringside).

If Lesnar is screwed out of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship thanks to a numbers-game-style takedown from Kane, Seth Rollins and J&J Security, what hope is there moving forward for Lesnar?

WWE cannot allow that to take place, as it would feel like a repeat of what happens on a weekly basis on TV.

The Authority getting involved at any point and distracting Lesnar just wouldn't work here. Lesnar and Rollins must be allowed to go at it one-on-one. There was a strong case to hold them at arm's length for a long period and deny fans the chance to see them fight fairly, but that wait has gone on long enough now.

This is the time for a defining fight and perhaps the time for Lesnar to regain his championship in a clean, conclusive manner.
