Richardson released a statement through the team, per Garafolo:
"I apologize for letting down my family, teammates, this organization and the fans. However, words aren't enough. This is something that can only be addressed by how I handle myself from this point on. I don't want this to take away from what the team is trying to accomplish. While I won't be there at the start of the regular season, I will do whatever I can to support my teammates until I'm able to return to the field.
"
Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reported that the suspension is for marijuana use.
Richardson, who made his first Pro Bowl last season, will not be eligible to return until the Jets' Week 6 matchup against Washington since they have a bye during Week 5.
ESPN's Trey Wingo noted Richardson's impact:
"This is disappointing for Sheldon and the team," coach Todd Bowles said, per Albert Breer of the NFL Network. "We’re going to support Sheldon and welcome him back upon his return. We will keep moving forward with our preparations for the upcoming season.”
Losing Richardson leaves a massive hole on the defensive line, where he's emerged as one of the best in football. Pro Football Focus' grading system ranked him the second-best 3-4 defensive end last season, behind only Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt.
The Jets will now be hoping first-round pick Leonard Williams can immediately step into the starting lineup to replace Richardson. They may also have to reconsider their stance with defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, who has been seeking a long-term extension.
