Lucas Vazquez to Real Madrid: Latest Transfer Details, Reaction and More
Lucas Vazquez will return to Real Madrid after just one season away, as Los Blancos decided to trigger his buyback option from Espanyol.
The capital-based club announced a long-term contract for the 24-year-old winger on Twitter on Thursday:
Vazquez was loaned to Espanyol for the 2014-15 campaign, in which he scored three goals and provided six assists across 34 La Liga appearances, per WhoScored.com. He is a pacey, agile wide man who is wanted by Los Blancos, according to Alberto Martinez of AS.
The player's qualities can be seen below:
Spanish outlet Marca (via Soccerlens) suggests Vazquez will fill a multifunctional role for new manager Rafa Benitez:
Espanyol president Joan Collet previously confirmed the Catalonia side exercised their option to buy before Madrid made an offer to re-sign the developing player, per Martinez. The middling La Liga club will maintain 25 percent of his rights.
Vazquez may struggle to get near the Madrid starting lineup with players such as Gareth Bale and Jese Rodriguez battling for minutes. Benitez can be expected to bring a pragmatic approach to the side, changing the 4-3-3 previous boss Carlo Ancelotti used into a more sustainable setup.
It's likely Vazquez will be utilised as a squad player and in a rotational role.
