Wimbledon 2015 Results: Wednesday Scores and Thursday Bracket Predictions

Steven CookJul 1, 2015

Second-round action at the 2015 Wimbledon Championships began Wednesday and will continue on into Thursday's Day 4 slate, with many of the world's top tennis stars set to face big-time tests in the opening week of play.

Not all of the premier names in the sport are safe as the second round continues forward. No. 7 Ana Ivanovic and No. 5 Kei Nishikori were two of the biggest stars to fall in Wednesday's action, as Ivanovic fell in straight sets to Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Nishikori withdrew with a calf injury.

The top seeds in both brackets cruised in the process, with Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic each taking care of business in quick straight-set encounters. No. 16 Venus Williams kept the hope alive for a fourth-round clash with her sister, topping Yulia Putintseva in a tough two-set match.

No. 2 Roger Federer vs. Sam Querrey

The 2015 Wimbledon has long been pegged as one of Roger Federer's last great chances at winning Grand Slam No. 18 before the young talent of the sport makes it impossible. He's begun in style but will start to get tested by Sam Querrey in the second round Thursday.

Federer has been reeling ever since his French Open defeat to Stan Wawrinka, but it didn't really show in his Wimbledon debut. He opened up his tournament with a straight-set dispatching of Damir Dzumhur, 6-1, 6-3, 6-3.

He further etched his place as the straight-set leader at Wimbledon in the process, as Mohandas Menon noted:

Federer and Querrey have both had long careers on the circuit but haven't been regular opponents across the net. They have met just twice in their careers, with no meetings since 2008.

Of course, in those matches Federer is a solid 2-0 with no set defeats against Querrey. With his game seemingly in the right place, he should have no trouble slipping past him once again in straight sets.

Prediction: Federer wins, 6-2, 6-4, 6-4

No. 10 Rafael Nadal vs. Dustin Brown

As shocking as it is that Rafael Nadal is a No. 10 seed at this year's Wimbledon, his continuously slipping quality of play is an obvious reason why. He has the chance to sway public opinion in his favor in the second round against Dustin Brown Thursday.

Nadal's second defeat at the French Open in the last decade just over a month ago had the feeling of inevitability, but the Spaniard looks poised to right his wrongs at Wimbledon. He opened up his tournament with a straight-set performance over Thomaz Bellucci.

With that said, he could be in for some trickiness in his next match. Brown is an unconventional opponent with a crafty style of play that could frustrate Nadal.

In fact, Brown is 1-0 in his career against Nadal after topping him last year in Halle. That was a straight-sets outing in which Brown proved he can contend with Nadal—or at least the watered-down version of Nadal that the tennis world sees today.

With that said, Nadal raises his game when it's needed most. Expect a hard-fought match in which the Spaniard reigns supreme.

Prediction: Nadal wins, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-3

Christina McHale vs. No. 18 Sabine Lisicki

Up-and-coming 23-year-old American Christina McHale has an opportunity to notch one of the biggest wins of her young career and match her longest run at a Grand Slam in Thursday's second-round meeting with No. 18 Sabine Lisicki.

Both players got things rolling at Wimbledon with straight-set first-round victories, but Lisicki underwent plenty of struggles to get herself there. She won just 46 percent of her first serves in the opening round against Jarmila Gajdosova, hitting seven double-faults as well.

Meanwhile, McHale is coming directly off a confidence-boosting 6-3, 6-2 win over Johanna Larsson in the first round. She's 0-1 for her career against Lisicki but has never played better tennis than at this current moment.

Playing on her first-ever match on the Centre Court, McHale will step up her game to pull off the upset.

Prediction: McHale wins, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5
