Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
ESPN's Adam Schefter previously cited a source who said McCaffrey is "good to go." The NFL insider initially reported on Sunday NFL Countdown there was an 80 percent chance he'd play:
San Francisco listed McCaffrey as questionable on the injury report after he was limited in practice on Thursday and didn't work out at all on Friday because of a calf issue.
To the consternation of Niners fans and fantasy football managers alike, the 2024 season was one to forget for the three-time Pro Bowler.
Calf and Achilles problems forced McCaffrey to miss the first eight games. He lasted four weeks before going back on injured reserve with a PCL injury.
That was effectively a season-ender. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said McCaffrey would need at least six weeks to recover and San Francisco had just five games left in the regular season.
McCaffrey's tone in an Instagram post after his knee injury also gave the impression he was turning the page to 2025.
"This wasn't my year, and sometimes when it rains, it pours," he said. "You can feel sorry for yourself and listen to the birds, or you can hold the line. I'm grateful for the support of everyone in my corner and promise I'll work smarter and harder than ever to come back better from this. I love my teammates, I love the 9ers, and I love football. God doesn't miss. Onward."
McCaffrey was one of multiple 49ers players to miss significant time, which is the biggest reason why the team went from reaching the Super Bowl in 2023 to missing the playoffs and losing 11 games.
The dramatic reversal in San Francisco's on-field fortunes led a lot of people to look at the larger picture.
McCaffrey signed a two-year extension with the 49ers last June that keeps him under contract though 2027. General manager John Lynch clearly sees him as a key player for the future.
That's why the 29-year-old's injury luck is concerning because there are no guarantees he can recapture his 2023 All-Pro form again.
